Sod Installation & Aftercare Guide
Installing new sod is one of the fastest ways to transform a bare or patchy yard into a lush, green lawn. At CDM Landscaping, we've laid sod across hundreds of properties in the Jasper, TN area — and the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles almost always comes down to preparation and aftercare.
Before we ever unroll a single piece of sod, we start with the soil. We remove existing weeds and debris, till the top 4–6 inches, and add a starter fertilizer to give the roots something to grab onto. Grading the surface is equally important — proper slope ensures water drains away from your foundation and doesn't pool in low spots.
When laying the sod, we stagger the seams in a brick-like pattern to prevent visible lines and weak spots. Each roll is pressed firmly against the next with no gaps and no overlaps. On slopes, we pin the sod with stakes to keep it from shifting while the roots establish.
The first two weeks after installation are critical. Water your new sod twice daily — once in the early morning and once in the late afternoon — keeping the soil moist about 2 inches deep. Avoid walking on it during this period so the roots can anchor without disruption.
By week three, you can begin tapering back to once-daily watering. Around day 21–28, gently tug on a corner of the sod — if it resists, the roots have taken hold. At that point you can mow for the first time, keeping the blade high (no lower than 3 inches) and making sure the mower blades are sharp.
