Top 5 Landscaping Tips for Homeowners

You don't need to hire a professional for every landscaping task — though we're always here when you do. There are several things homeowners can do themselves to keep their yard looking sharp between professional visits. Here are our top five tips.

1. Edge your beds regularly. Nothing makes a yard look more polished than clean, defined edges between your lawn and garden beds. A simple manual edger or half-moon spade is all you need. Do this every 3–4 weeks during the growing season and the difference will be immediately noticeable.

2. Mulch every spring. A fresh 2–3 inch layer of mulch in your garden beds does three things: it retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and gives your yard a clean, finished look. Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks — leave a few inches of clearance to prevent rot.

3. Water deeply, not frequently. Many homeowners water their lawn a little every day, which encourages shallow roots. Instead, water deeply 2–3 times per week. This trains roots to grow deeper into the soil, making your lawn more drought-resistant and resilient.

4. Don't cut your grass too short. Scalping your lawn might seem like it saves time between mows, but it stresses the grass and opens the door for weeds. Keep your mower blade at 3–3.5 inches for most Tennessee grass types. Taller grass shades the soil and naturally crowds out weeds.

5. Pull weeds before they seed. A single dandelion can release hundreds of seeds. Make it a habit to pull weeds as soon as you spot them — before they flower and spread. A few minutes of weeding each week saves hours of work later in the season.
